💡Nutrition Discoveries For Your Health In 2023

There were also a lot of shocking health and wellness stories and surprising nutrition discoveries in 2022 that changed how we think about food and nutrition, so we'd like to help you remember the year by putting together a list of the most shocking ones.

Here are some important nutrition discoveries for your health in 2023.

Beta-carotene

Beta-carotene is a bright orange pigment in foods like squash, cantaloupe, and carrots. It is often taken as a supplement to improve the eyes', immune system, and skin's health. But the Journal of the American College of Cardiology says this pigment has been linked to a shocking discovery.

This study examined how omega-3s, magnesium, and beta-carotene, all joint supplements, affect the body. Unfortunately, they found that beta-carotene supplements were linked to an increased risk of death from heart disease and any other cause. So, even though there isn't much, well-known experts advise avoiding this.

Omega-3

Omega-3 fatty acids help the brain significantly, making it less likely that you will get Alzheimer's or dementia. Omega-3s are usually found in foods like fatty fish, nuts, and seeds, but you can also take them as a supplement.

Even though many people know that omega-3s are good for brain health, some may only know how much once new research came out this past year. The study, which came out in May 2022 in the journal Nutrients, found that people with more omega-3s were 49% less likely to get Alzheimer's disease. So this is an excellent reason to go out and buy an omega-3 supplement.

Plant-Based Diet

People who eat only plants might be surprised to learn that many plant-based meat substitutes are considered to be some of the lowest-quality proteins available.

This past year, scientists compared regular chicken to soy-based chicken. Even though the fake chicken was 24% protein, they found that human cells didn't absorb it as well as they did with real chicken.

These results are essential for people who don't eat meat because they suggest that they may work harder than those who eat meat to get enough high-quality protein.

Exercise and Eating Well

Even if you exercise, a bad diet can make you more likely to get a disease that will kill you.

You can easily make up for it by working out a lot if you don't eat well. But this past year, researchers found that even if you work out regularly, eating a bad diet can make you more likely to die from heart disease or cancer.

According to a study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, eating well and exercising reduces the risk of death. So people who thought they only needed to focus on one part of their health should pay attention to this.

Drinking Coffee

There is a lot of talk about whether or not coffee is "healthy" all the time. It has been found that drinking moderate amounts of coffee can help improve cognitive health and even lower the risk of Alzheimer's and dementia. It may also help improve the gut microbiome. But coffee has also been known to make it hard to sleep, cause panic attacks, and even make people with high blood pressure have problems with their hearts.

It was surprising to learn that drinking two to three cups of coffee daily may lower heart disease risk and extend life. The European Journal of Clinical Nutrition published these results in September of this year. So not only was it surprising to learn that coffee could help you live longer, but it was also surprising to learn that as much as two or three cups a day could help.

Mediterranean Diet

The Mediterranean diet has been recommended for a long time to improve brain health and function because it is high in healthy fats and whole, high-fiber foods.

But in October of this year, researchers looked at how this diet affected adults and couldn't find a link between a Mediterranean diet and a lower risk of dementia. But, of course, these results come from just one study, so they don't prove that the Mediterranean diet has no health benefits.
